Ion Exchange Resin FAQs

What type of ion exchange resin do I need?

The correct resin depends on the application, feed water quality and target water quality. Softening resin is commonly used for hardness removal, while mixed bed or deionisation resin may be used for low conductivity or polishing applications.

How much resin do I need for a vessel refill?

The required resin volume depends on vessel size, system design, freeboard requirement and service flow rate. Overfilling or underfilling a vessel can affect performance, pressure drop, backwash behaviour and regeneration efficiency.

When should ion exchange resin be replaced?

Resin should be replaced when treated water quality can no longer be maintained, regeneration becomes inefficient, pressure drop increases, or the resin shows signs of fouling, oxidation or physical breakdown. Replacement timing depends on water quality, operating conditions and regeneration history.

Can I replace resin with a different brand?

In many cases, resin can be replaced with an equivalent product from another manufacturer, but resin type, functional group, ionic form, bead size, capacity and operating conditions should be checked first. Crystwater can help review replacement options before you order.
