An 8040 RO membrane is one of the most common reverse osmosis element formats used in commercial and industrial water treatment. The format is widely used in bore water systems, process water plants, car wash RO systems, food and beverage applications, OEM skids and other systems that require higher permeate flow than compact residential elements.
The important point is that 8040 describes the membrane size, not its water treatment duty. Two elements can both fit an 8-inch pressure vessel and still require very different feed water salinity, operating pressure, flow conditions and pre-treatment.
What Does 8040 Mean in an RO Membrane?
The name 8040 usually refers to a spiral-wound reverse osmosis membrane element that is approximately 8 inches in diameter and 40 inches long. This standard physical format allows many commercial and industrial RO pressure vessels to accept membrane elements from different manufacturers.
Physical fit alone does not confirm compatibility. An 8040 element may be an ultra-low pressure membrane, a brackish water RO membrane or a seawater RO membrane. Each type is designed around a different range of salinity, pressure and system performance.

ULP, BWRO and SWRO Are Different Membrane Categories
8040 describes the physical 8" × 40" membrane element format, not the membrane duty. ULP, BWRO and SWRO membranes may all be supplied in 8040 format, but they are selected for different feedwater salinity, operating pressure and permeate quality requirements. The correct choice depends on the water source, system design and treatment objective.
ULP 8040 Membranes
Ultra-low pressure, or ULP, 8040 membranes are generally intended for lower-pressure, lower-TDS feedwater applications where the system is designed for that duty.
A ULP element should not automatically be used for higher salinity bore water or as a substitute for a brackish water membrane. Lower test pressure does not mean the membrane is suitable for every commercial RO system.
For selected lower TDS applications, the ULP-8040MR-2 ultra-low pressure RO membrane may be an option. Availability, lead time and suitability should be confirmed before ordering or specifying it.
BWRO 8040 Membranes
Brackish water RO, or BWRO, 8040 membranes are commonly used for brackish water RO, bore water RO, commercial RO and many industrial process water systems. SWRO 8040 Membranes
Seawater RO, or SWRO, 8040 membranes are designed for high-salinity or seawater applications and typically require higher operating pressure. They should not be selected for a normal brackish water system simply because the element size is also 8040.

A practical membrane selection review should compare both the replacement element specification and the actual RO system conditions.

8040 RO Membranes for Bore Water and Industrial Applications
Bore water quality can vary widely across Australia. Some bore water may be relatively low in TDS, while other sources contain much higher dissolved salts, hardness, silica, iron or other constituents that affect RO system design.
For commercial and light industrial applications, an 8040 RO membrane should be selected together with appropriate pre-treatment and system operating conditions. The membrane alone cannot correct poor pre-treatment, scaling risk, oxidant exposure or an unsuitable recovery rate.
