Domestic RO & MF Membrane FAQs

How do I know which membrane fits my domestic system?

Check the membrane model, size, flow rating and system type printed on the existing membrane or system label. Photos of the membrane, housing and system layout can help identify possible replacement options.

When should I choose an RO membrane?

Choose an RO membrane when the system is designed to reduce dissolved salts, TDS and selected dissolved contaminants. Domestic RO membranes are commonly used in drinking water systems where finer separation is required.

When should I choose an MF membrane?

Choose an MF membrane when the main purpose is physical filtration of suspended particles, fine solids or selected microorganisms, depending on the membrane specification. MF membranes are commonly used where particle removal is required without the same dissolved-salt reduction expected from RO.

What is the difference between RO and MF membranes?

RO membranes provide much finer separation and are used for dissolved solids reduction. MF membranes are mainly used for physical filtration of particles and suspended matter. They are different technologies and are not directly interchangeable.

Are all domestic RO membranes interchangeable?

Not always. Some domestic RO membranes share common sizes, but compatibility depends on membrane dimensions, flow rating, fitting style and system design.

Can an MF membrane replace an RO membrane?

No, not in most cases. MF and RO membranes perform different treatment roles. An MF membrane will not provide the same dissolved solids reduction as an RO membrane, and an RO membrane cannot simply replace an MF membrane unless the system is designed for it.

When should a domestic membrane be replaced?

A membrane may need replacement when water quality declines, flow rate drops, pressure loss increases, or the system reaches the recommended service interval. For RO systems, water quality testing can help confirm membrane performance.

Can Crystwater identify a membrane from photos?

In many cases, photos of the membrane label, housing, fittings and system layout can help narrow down the correct replacement type or identify what additional information is needed.
