Domestic Activated Carbon FAQs
What is activated carbon used for in domestic water filtration?
Activated carbon is commonly used to improve taste and odour and reduce chlorine in suitable water filtration applications. It may be used as a cartridge, loose media or part of a filter pack.
What is the difference between carbon block and granular activated carbon?
Carbon block filters are formed cartridges and are commonly used in under-sink and cartridge systems. Granular activated carbon is loose media and is more commonly used in refillable vessels or selected filtration setups.
Can activated carbon be used for rainwater?
Activated carbon can help with taste and odour polishing in some rainwater systems, but rainwater often also needs sediment filtration and, depending on use, suitable disinfection.
Does activated carbon remove sediment?
Activated carbon is not mainly a sediment filter. A sediment filter is usually placed before carbon filtration to reduce particles and help protect the carbon filter.
When should activated carbon be replaced?
Replacement depends on water quality, flow rate, usage and the target contaminant. Taste or odour returning, reduced performance or reaching the service interval can indicate replacement is needed.
Can I use any activated carbon in a domestic filter?
No. The carbon format, particle size, application and compatibility with the housing or system need to be considered. Use a product suitable for the intended water filtration application.
