Need Help Choosing the Right Cartridge Filter?
Most cartridge filters are selected by size, filter type, micron rating and water source. If your current cartridge is not clearly labelled, send photos of the housing, old filter and system layout and Crystwater can help narrow down a suitable replacement.
Cartridge Filter FAQs
How do I know what size cartridge I need?
Check the length and diameter of your existing cartridge or filter housing. Common domestic sizes include 10 inch and 20 inch lengths, with either slimline or larger Big Blue style diameters. If the label is missing, photos and basic measurements can usually help identify the right size.
What is the difference between sediment and carbon cartridge filters?
Sediment filters mainly reduce physical particles such as dirt, rust and sand. Carbon filters are generally used to improve taste and odour and reduce chlorine in suitable applications. Many domestic systems use a sediment filter before a carbon filter.
Can cartridge filters be used for rainwater tanks?
Yes, cartridge filters are commonly used for rainwater filtration, especially to reduce sediment before household use or before other treatment equipment. Rainwater applications may need suitable pre-filtration, regular maintenance and, where required, disinfection.
What micron rating should I choose?
A lower micron rating captures finer particles but may block faster if the water has high sediment load. Common domestic choices depend on the water source, flow rate and purpose. For dirty water, staged filtration may perform better than using one very fine cartridge.
How often should I replace a cartridge filter?
Replacement depends on water quality, usage and filter type. A cartridge may need replacing when flow drops, pressure loss increases, taste or odour changes, or the recommended service period has passed.
Can I replace a cartridge with a different brand?
Often yes, if the cartridge size, diameter, end style and application are compatible with the housing. The key is matching the physical fit and intended filtration purpose, not just the brand name.
